What an interesting week it was. Attempting to study full-time while working 70 hours/fortnight with a constantly varying roster, it quickly became obvious that it wasn’t sustainable. After trying to manage, by Wednesday I had to admit defeat and withdraw from 2 units. This means overall my degree will take 6 years instead of 3, but If I can handle 2 unit easily I think I will try doing 3 units next term which would bring my degree back to 4 years.
I am not sure if it was the trip away or what but the start of term crept up on me very quickly and before I knew it, it was 5 days out from starting and I hadn’t even bought my textbooks. This certainly didn’t help with trying to stay on top of my course work. Even now I am still waiting on the arrival of 2 textbooks, the 1 textbook that did show up was for a unit I withdrew from.
I have managed to get close to a week ahead on my accounting unit, so hopefully, my economics textbook comes on Monday next week and I can mostly focus on my economics unit and catch back up on that.
I got my company this afternoon for the assessments in my accounting unit, Spirax Sarco Engineering, it is an industrial machinery manufacturer from the UK. I was originally under the impression that we would be getting made-up companies, but no, everyone got real companies. I kind of wish I got something ‘cooler’ or more aligned with my interests, something in property or construction even. Oh well, accounting is the same no matter the business.
After week 1, I am feeling excited and hopefully, so far all the course work is interesting and easy to follow. I am annoyed that through poor management, I have let myself get slightly behind in economics but with a quick rearrangement of study plans, I will be okay in the long run.
Bring on week 2…
I am with you. I work full time and was going to do 4 subjects as well, dropped to 3 and now to 2 subject, still struggling to fit everything in around work (mainly because I thought term started this week and was horrified when I logged on and found out we’re in week 2!)
I got a company that makes pumps, engines and break discs, was also hoping for a cooler company…
Hope you catch up with your studies, I will be spending my weekend catching up as well.

oh no that sounds scary. I freaked out when I realised a week out from the start of term and I have even bought my textbooks. good luck with catching up. Make sure the set-aside time for study and do it. Life will always try to get in the way, you just have to be strict with your study schedule.

I also just dropped my load to two subjects. I was a bit ambitious trying to master full time study around a business and 2 kids! Are you studying a Bachelor of Property?

Yeah I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Property but I am probably going to switch to a Bachelor of Business (Property Major) for something more all-rounded but not sure yet.

I have a background in Real Estate but am studying the Bachelor of Property to perhaps move to Valuation or Facilities Management. What area are you hoping to work in?

I looking to switch to business because of how focussed property is on valuation. I am interested in working within commercial/industrial/retail sales or leasing, maybe property management. I am also interested in property development too.
I recently completed my registration course and loved it. I am looking to get a job in residential RE in the meantime to gain experience and find what I am best suited at.
